This 6-day itinerary covers the most dramatic landscapes of Northern Vietnam, from the limestone pinnacles of Ha Giang to the majestic waterfalls of Cao Bang.
The Ultimate Northern Frontier: 6-Day Adventure
Day 1: Ha Giang City – Quan Ba – Hmong King Palace – Dong Van
Morning: Leave Ha Giang City and climb Bac Sum Pass. Stop at Quan Ba Heaven Gate to photograph the Twin Mountains (Fairy Breast Mountains).
Lunch: Traditional Vietnamese lunch in Yen Minh town.
Afternoon: Wind through the high karst peaks to Sa Phin. Visit the Hmong King Palace (Dinh Vua Meo), a fortress built by the wealthy Opium King. Drive the final stretch to Dong Van.
Evening: Walk the Dong Van Ancient Town.
Stay: Traditional Hmong Homestay in Dong Van.
Meals: Lunch (L), Dinner (D).
Day 2: Dong Van – Lung Cu – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Nho Que River – Meo Vac
Morning: Travel to the Lung Cu Flag Tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam. Visit Lo Lo Chai Village at the foot of the mountain to see the unique architecture of the Lo Lo people.
Lunch: Local food in Dong Van town.
Afternoon: Conquer Ma Pi Leng Pass, the most beautiful road in Vietnam. Hike the Sky Path for panoramic views. Take a shuttle down to the Nho Que River for a boat trip through the 1,000m deep Tu San Canyon.
Evening: Arrive in Meo Vac.
Stay: Pavi Village Homestay (a beautiful community of Hmong-style clay houses).
Meals: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Dinner (D).
Day 3: Meo Vac – Bao Lac – 14-Floor Pass – Angel Eye Mountain
Morning: A long but beautiful drive through the deep valleys of the Gam River. Stop in Bao Lac town, home to the Black Lolo ethnic group.
Lunch: Local rice and mountain vegetables in Bao Lac.
Afternoon: Conquer the Me Pia Pass (14-Floor Pass). Note: You will take a 45-minute hike to the secret viewpoint to see the 14 sharp “S-turns” of the road. Continue driving into Cao Bang province to Angel Eye Mountain (Nui Thung).
Evening: Enjoy the silence of the valley, surrounded by grazing horses and limestone peaks.
Stay: Homestay in the Nui Thung Valley or a nearby Tay village.
Meals: B, L, D (BBQ dinner by the mountain is a highlight).
Day 4: Angel Eye Mountain – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave – Khuoi Ky Village
Morning: Wake up to the sunrise over the “hole” in Angel Eye Mountain. Drive through the famous Ma Phuc Pass toward the Chinese border.
Lunch: Local specialties (river fish and bamboo shoots) near the waterfall.
Afternoon: Marvel at Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest in Vietnam. Take a raft to the foot of the falls. Visit Nguom Ngao Cave, a massive underground system with gold-colored stalactites.
Evening: Check into the Khuoi Ky Stone Village, where houses are over 400 years old.
Stay: Stone House Homestay (Tay ethnic family).
Meals: B, L, D.
Day 5: Khuoi Ky – Phuc Sen Village – Cao Bang City
Morning: Spend time in Khuoi Ky village to see how the Tay people live. Depart for Phuc Sen Village, famous for its 1,000-year-old tradition of blacksmithing (knives) and handmade incense or paper.
Lunch: Local “Phở Vịt Quay” (Roast duck noodles) in the village.
Afternoon: Relaxing drive back to Cao Bang City. Visit the local market to see the bustle of the city and buy famous Cao Bang chestnuts.
Evening: Farewell dinner at a local restaurant in the city.
Stay: Boutique Hotel or Homestay in Cao Bang City center.

Day 6: Cao Bang City – Lang Son – Hanoi
Morning: Depart Cao Bang via Highway 4. This road is famous for its history during the French war.
Lunch: Stop in Lang Son City for their legendary Roasted Duck (Vit Quay Lang Son).
Afternoon: Pass through the Chi Lang Pass and head back to Hanoi. Arrive in the capital by approximately 5:30 PM.
